moltn is what happens when makeup artistry meets the mother of invention. Born from the need for a kit that was both comprehensive and lightweight, celebrity makeup artist and designer Vanessa Scali, collaborated with her inventor and lawyer husband, Mark Krone, to come up with a solution. Three decades of hauling a bulky collection of palettes, tubes, and compacts from job to job had caused Vanessa physical strain and given her firsthand insight into the need for a more streamlined system. After years of prototyping and fine-tuning, Vanessa and Mark developed a 3D-printed, made-to-order palette system with a variety of insert options to hold different makeup shades and formulas, aiming to improve the efficiency, versatility, and sustainability of every makeup kit.
At moltn, we believe less is more. While our palettes maximize efficiency for makeup artists, they are also designed to minimize environmental impact. To achieve this, each piece is made-to-order using 3D printing technology and produced as a single unit, without any support pieces, brims, or sprues. Plastic consumption is further reduced using gyroidal infills – a computer-generated interior lattice structure that provides strength while dramatically decreasing weight and material consumption. As a result, each palette is created with minimal waste without compromising quality. By printing on demand, we eliminate the need for warehousing, further reducing our footprint.
At the moment, we only use recyclable materials, and we are constantly reevaluating and testing new options. Currently, we are vetting recycled filaments and 100% post-consumer recycled materials from companies that source these materials from waste streams, such as food packaging, for use in printing our cases. Our goal is to establish a completely closed-loop system with our products.
